About the event
Every year, Livro Aberto hosts this ever-popular family fair to celebrate International Children’s Day and to raise funds to support our children’s literacy programs in Maputo and local communities.
Launched in June 2012, the fair is now in its eighth year. It has become well known in Maputo as the annual gathering for national and international families alike, celebrating Maputo’s children from all walks of life. In 2018, the fair was attended by over 400 people from in and around the city, who came to enjoy the many attractions from creative and educational children’s activities such as poetry, arts and crafts, face painting and book-making, to story-telling, capoeira, dance, drumming, games and competitions. Parents were able to enjoy lunch and coffee at Café Acacia, visit our designer stalls selling books, designer jewelry, bags and more.
With the devastating natural catastrophe that has affected the central provinces of Mozambique, this year we are also focusing on educational support for children of Sofala province affected by Cyclone Idai. Therefore, the fair’s theme this year is Children Helping Children. This theme was specifically chosen to show children how they can help other children in need. The dynamic fair activities, will include stations for children to create handmade books and educational games, which we will placed into upcycled rice sacks, along with a donated book, capulana, school supplies and etc. Our aim is that, at minimum, 500 children in Sofala province will receive these Literacy Kits. Therefore, this year, our community fair will spread the message of helping others in need and it will continue to promote the joy of literacy for children in Maputo.
This event has been made possible each year by the amazing sponsors, donors and partners that support Livro Aberto’s vision of literacy for all children. We are raising funds this year to create the 500 Literacy Kit handmade sacks, purchase materials for children to produce the books and games for the Literacy Kits and to continue to support Livro Aberto’s literacy initiatives around Maputo.
