5th Series of Classical Music of Maputo 2018
Performances by: Orquestra and Coro Xiquitsi with local artists: Stewart Sukuma, Wazimbo, Mingas, Yolanda Kakana and Willy and Aníbal
Stewart Sukuma (Luis Pereira) musically known as Stewart Sukuma, is a Mozambican singer. His stage name Stewart Sukuma means ‘Rise Up’ in Zulu and ‘Push’ in Swahili. He was born in Cuamba, Niassa Province in Mozambique.Stewart Sukuma combines traditional and contemporary Mozambican music with revolutionary instrumentation to create an energetic and danceable sound that can be called Afro / Pop / Jazz. Contagious rhythms mixed with sweet but powerful melodies carry a message of hope but at the same time it would revolutionise new times in Africa and the world, challenging the laziest foot for a dance and the laziest head for a reflection of the role that music plays in communication with the masses.
Wazimbo (Humberto Carlos Benfica, known as Wazimbo (born November 11, 1948), is a Mozambican vocalist considered one of the greatest voices of Mozambique and one of the most famous marrabenta singers. Born in Chibuto, in Gaza Province, Mozambique he moved to the capital where he grew up in the popular neighbourhood Mafalala. There he started as a vocal member for the local group "Silverstars" and then "Geiziers". Later, he joined Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Moçambique.
Mingas (Elisa Domingas Jamisse) is a Mozambican singer born in Maputo. She started singing at a very early age. Her music is a mixture of Afro sounds that gives prominence to the rhythms of the Chope people of southern Mozambique, and she is one of the most famous singers of Marrabenta. Her career is marked with big hits and collaborations with major African singers like Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Angélique Kidjo, Baba Maal, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Jimmy Dludlu, Gilberto Gil, among others.
Yolanda Kakana is a Mozambican singer who as a child hardly dreamed she would be at the top of the playbill. She loved playing sports and sang only to accompany her brother when he played the guitar. Even when she reached adulthood, the idea barely crossed her mind. But at age 20, while she was studying environmental engineering, friends who were aware of her talent urged her to take part in a singing competition on television. And that was how the Kakana adventure began. In 2004, together with producer and guitarist Jim Gwaza (Azarias Arone Nhabete) she founded the group that bears her stage name, Kakana. Their lyrics are a cheerful mix of Portuguese, English, Changana, Makhuwa and Chope.
Willy and Aníbal are two Mozambican brothers who have revealed themselves, over the course of more than thirty years of their existence, talented and true interpreters of the emotions of the people. Their songs evoke a world of romance and feeling.
