Maputo municipality lays out 4.3 billion meticais 2017 budget

The Municipal Council of the City of Maputo will spend 4.3 billion meticais next year, split between investment and current expenditure, Director of Finance Ananias Couana told reporters after the 15th Ordinary Session of the Municipal Assembly.

Couana explained that the revenue would come from in tax collection and provision of services, such as parking and market fees. The amount will be allocated to the Council’s internal needs, to finishing works already under way and investments planned for the coming year.

“We will undertake improvements in several streets and avenues. We are planning to pave the Rua do Bagamoyo and install traffic lights in some parts of the city,” he said.

Couana said that the city council had made a positive impact this year and was already taking ‘big steps’ towards its goals for the future.

He also gave a “positive reckoning” to the public-private partnerships that had resulted in the restoration of Jardim das Berlengas in Alto Maé and the Museu market.

Currently, the Museu market, located in one of the capital’s prime areas, is an undefined space with no drainage system and cluttered huts, where many people nevertheless eat food meals and even spend leisure time.

Maputo municipality, which is heading up the project, launched a public tender for the rehabilitation of the market, the selected company to finance the project. The temporary transfer of the vendors to the Rua dos Lusíadas will itself cost close to US$200,000, and the reconstruction of the market approximately US$2 million.
