In a historic decision, the UN General Assembly voted unanimously on 2 July 2010 in New York to create a new entity to accelerate progress and meet the demands of women and girls around the world. The creation of UN Women – United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment is the result of years of negotiations between UN member states and the women’s advocacy movement around the world. It is part of the United Nations reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates of greater impact.
