AKDN and the Government of Mozambique signed a diplomatic Agreement of Co-operation for Development in 1998. AKDN’s activities are concentrated in Cabo Delgado, the northernmost, and poorest, province of Mozambique where the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) works with communities in 13 districts. The Aga Khan Academy Maputo has been operational since 2009, and in addition, the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development has been engaged in various projects, including the Moztex factory and the rehabilitation of the Polana Hotel. Today, AKDN employs over 1,000 people with 96% Mozambicans.
