Mozambique moves to lower MSME financing costs by scrapping cost premium

Construction cement prices went up in Maputo and Matola on Wednesday. Last week, a 50 kg bag of various brands and qualities cost between 340 and 390 meticais, but today is 40 meticais more expensive.
Residents in Maputo and Matola are unhappy with the rising price, with some of the younger ones even saying that they will have to postpone their dream of owning their own home.
Interviewees say they are dissatisfied with the price hike, and those who are already building say they will stop work.
Dona Marta lives in a house in the Chiango neighbourhood with 2 children and more than 7 grandchildren. She says she has been gradually expanding the house to give the family more room, but now, works will have to be put on hold.
Professional building share her dissatisfaction and say that some of their works will now be suspended indefinitely.
In 2011, a 50kg bag of cement cost around 250 Meticais, but by the end of 2017, it was between 350 and 360 Meticais. Today, it is around 420 meticais.
