Clandestine drinks factory closed in Beira, Mozambique

The Mozambican tax authority closed down a clandestine factory producing an alcoholic beverage called Gin Zambeze in Beira on Tuesday afternoon, the third case in Sofala in less than, according to the newspaper O País online.
The factory, which was operating without any customs authorisation, was located in a warehouse in a seemingly abandoned area in the city’s Pioneiros neighbourhood.
The plant was closed following the seizure of a car at a checkpoint in Nhamatanda district containing 300 20-bottle packages of the beverage destined for sale in Maringue district a few days ago.
According to the tax authority, a significant proportion of the beverages did not carry a fiscal control stamp, in effect turning the matter into one of smuggling.
Four thousand filled bottles and 80,000 empty bottles were found while closing the factory, and equipment used to manufacture and package the beverage was also seized.
The alleged owner of the factory, a Chinese national, declined to answer questions.
