The fate of vehicles, motorcycles and other objects seized by Defence and Security Forces from the armed men who carried out attacks in Mocimboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado province, will be decided in court, according to information provided by the joint command, Notícias reports.
In all, there are six vehicles, three motorcycles, 130 books in Arabic, including the Koran, several blunt instruments, including machetes, axes, hammers and arrows, dozens of AK-47 firearms, double barrelled shotguns, rifles, Mauser pistols and more than five hundred rounds of ammunition.
In the main court case, Cabo Delgado’s Provincial Prosecutor’s Office is going to produce a definitive charge for the 214 individuals suspected of being part of the armed group that has been carrying out attacks in Cabo Delgado, and Mocimboa da Praia especially.
Proof of this is already in evidence, and of the 214 defendants, 153 are in custody and 61 have been released on terms of residence, the court having decided that there is no reason to keep them in jail, and that they can await their trial at large.
Ten women and 32 Tanzanians form part of the group. No foreign defendants have been granted bail.
According to our information, none of the 32 Tanzanian citizens detained in connection with the attacks of Mocimboa da Praia will be extradited. Given that the crimes were committed in Mozambique, Tanzanian detainees tried and convicted for their participation in the attacks will serve their sentences in Mozambican jails.
The accused are charged with criminal conspiracy, possession and use of prohibited weapons, with punishments between 20 to 24 years in jail. They are also accused of looting, using knives and other weapons, and acts of arson.
