Mozambican police said yesterday that no effort was being spared in identifying the perpetrators of the abduction last week of journalist Ericino de Salema.
“Police are sparing no effort. We are unconditionally committed to identifying and detaining the individuals responsible for this crime,” police spokesman Inácio Dina said at the corporation’s weekly press briefing.
Journalists asked Dina why people close to de Salema had not yet been interviewed in the investigation process. “We are open to receiving any information from any source. At this moment, we are evaluating anything that could help identify and detains the culprits,” Dina said.
Asked by journalists about the lack of clarification in previous instances of violence against academics and political analysts critical of the Mozambican government, Dina said that each case was unique and required independent consideration.
“The treatment of each case requires a redoubled effort, because the form of commitment is what determines the form of investigation,” he said.
Dina added that, because of the complexity of each incident, positing a link between the attack on de Salema and similar cases in the past could actually jeopardise the success of the investigation.
Ericino de Salema was kidnapped on 27 July as he was leaving the National Union of Journalists building in central Maputo and was found dumped outside the capital a few hours later with injuries to his legs and left arm.
Salema, who is also a lawyer, is a commentator for “Pontos de Vista”, a popular STV current affairs programme.
Salema is the second “Pontos de Vista” contributor to be attacked. In May 2016, political scientist José Macuane was shot in the legs by unknown individuals who kidnapped him in the centre of Maputo and took him to the same area where Salema was dumped.
