Mozambique: MDM leader calls for repeat of elections as only way to end crisis - Watch
The Constitutional Affairs, Human Rights and Legality Committee has approved a motion for a resolution that allows the Mozambican parliament to assume extraordinary powers to revise the constitution.
The proposal approved by the first parliamentary commission “will allow the assembly of the republic to make a flexible amendment of the constitution of the republic” previously submitted by the head of the state, Radio Mozambique reports.
Commission chairman of this Edson Macuácua explained that the proposal allows the waiver of some requirements and formalities that are a barrier to the revision of the constitution.
Edson Macuácua said that the consideration of the amendment of the constitution was proceeding at a good pace and there was consensus among the parliamentary benches.
One example of this consensus was the understanding on the criteria to be adopted for the election of presidents of the municipalities (mayors) and provincial governors.
