Mozambique and Kenya hope to revive cooperation

The Mozambican and Kenyan governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Maputo on Thursday in order to revive ties of cooperation in the areas of trade and investment.

The Memorandum was signed by Mozambican Foreign Minister Jose Pacheco and his Kenyan counterpart Monica Juma at a ceremony witnessed by the Presidents of the two countries, Filipe Nyusi and Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kenyatta, who is on a two day state visit to Mozambique, was earlier received by Nyusi, prior to official talks between Mozambican and Kenyan delegations.

At a press conference after the talks, Pacheco said the two governments are interested in relaunching cooperation in areas of common interest such as infrastructures, energy, agriculture and tourism.

“We also want to benefit from Kenya’s capacity to train cadres in the defence sector, and from this country’s experience in the area of civil identification”, added Pacheco. He noted that Kenya had adopted a mechanism which allows Mozambicans resident in Kenya to obtain Kenyan identity documents.

“Mozambique also hopes to benefit from Kenya’s experience in the prison services, particularly in the social and economic rehabilitation of prisoners after they have completed their sentences”, said Pacheco.

Juma said that Kenyatta has come to Mozambique with the task of reviving the Joint Cooperation Commission between the two countries, and expanding the areas in which they can cooperate.

“In the area of transport, we want to link the port of Beira to Mombasa”, said Juma. “We also want to learn from the experiences of Mozambique to improve our mining sector and the exploitation of resources such as natural gas”.

Kenya, she added, wanted to boost trade with Mozambique and Implement the African Free Trade Area.

Kenya has also faced the menace of the Al-Shabaab Somali terrorist organisation. Juma said such groups are a threat to all of Africa, and so Kenya is prepared to share its anti-terrorist experience with other countries.
