The Mozambican National Meteorological Institute (INAM) needs EUR 16 million for equipment to improve the accuracy of its forecasts, Director General Adérito Aramuge says.
The money is needed to expand the network of meteorological observatories on land and at sea, Aramuge told the audience at a seminar on National Preparedness and Resilience to Natural Disasters held in Maputo on Monday, and quoted yesterday by the daily Notícias.
At the same event, Queiroz Alberto, the institution’s meteorologist, gave as an example the night of January 31, when a warning of rain and strong winds was sent to more than 10 districts of the south and centre of the country, but the storm failed to materialise.
INAM uses international models known as GSM and WRF, which are based on global observations but do not provide details of what may happen at local level, Alberto added.
The director general said that the expansion of meteorological observations “implies a great challenge in the operationalisation and expansion of the radar network”.
“It is true that we cannot stop natural disasters, but we can be prepared with knowledge and tools so that lives can be saved and assets protected by an effective and efficient early warning system,” Aramuge concluded.
