Three individuals, including one woman, are being held by the Mozambican police in Maputo province, accused of belonging to a cattle-rustling gang stealing. Two other members of the group are still at large.
The individuals were stopped last Wednesday in Boane district as they were transporting three head of already-slaughtered cattle to sell in Maputo.
Police claim that the woman is the mastermind of the alleged cattle thieves.
Although she denies the charges, police insist that it was she who engaged the people who raids the livestock pens, and arranged transport as well as the places and personnel for the slaughtering.
One of the youths implicated in the case claimed that he was innocent and did not know that the cattle were stolen, saying that he and his friend were contacted to help transport the meat for which they would be paid in cash.
Of the two fugitives, one of them is the driver of the van in which the carcases were being transported, now in the possession of the PRM District Command in Boane.
