Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is in Maputo where he held talks this morning with his Mozambican counterpart José Pacheco.
The visit is part of Lavrov’s ministerial tour of Africa, which also takes him to Zimbabwe and Ethiopia. He was previously visitng Angola and Namibia.
In addition to meeting the his Mozambican counterpart , the Russian foreign minister will also meet president Filipe Nyusi.
A Russian embassy press release cited by APA earlier this week states that “Moscow welcomes Maputo’s interest to attract investment and technical assistance from our country, and the interest of Russian operators in the promotion of mutually beneficial projects in Mozambique”.
According to the same source, the Russian Embassy statement added that an example of such cooperation is the participation of the Russian company Rosneft in the tender for hydrocarbon exploration in Mozambique in 2015.

It continued, APA reported: “The discussion of topics on the bilateral agenda is expected to focus on the forthcoming opening of the intergovernmental commission on economic and scientific-technical cooperation, whose first meeting is scheduled for April this year in the Mozambican capital. Attached is great importance to this structure as the actuator mechanism for diverse Russian-Mozambican cooperation”.
