African Development Bank delivers US$28 million to Mozambique

The African Development Bank (AfDB) will today deliver US$28 million to Mozambique in support of two projects, one to combat the effects of drought and the other to develop agriculture and industry.
The formal handover of the funding will take place at a ceremony at the Ministry of Finance in Maputo.
Half the funding will be used to implement the Drought Recovery and Agricultural Resilience Project, “aimed at developing the capacities of rural communities to meet the challenges of climate change, poverty, food insecurity and land degradation,” an AfDB note reads.
Over a five-year period, provision will be made for irrigation, improvement of food production and marketing activities and training of communities in districts prone to drought, with a total of around 20,000 direct beneficiaries and 20,000 indirect beneficiaries, the document claims.
The other half of the support goes to a project of five years standing to strengthen the training and applied research capacity of the Universidade Lúrio, a Mozambican public higher education institution.
The aim is to foster the creation of “skilled labour for the country to improve productivity” in the areas of agriculture and industry, the project’s summary reads.
UniLúrio’s agriculture and industry programs focus on Forestry, Rural Development and Animal Husbandryas well as Computational, Civil, Mechanical and Geological engineering.
The project aims to help UniLurio increase employability and entrepreneurship and make university access more equitable, “thus helping to improve the situation in the national higher education system”.
