Nyusi and Dhlakama address military issues – Mozambique

President Filipe Nyusi yesterday met Afonso Dhlakama to discuss the disarmament, demobilisation and the reintegration of Renamo military personnel into the Defence and Security Forces.
The meeting took place at Nhamadjiwa [also spelt Nhamadjiwa, Nhamadjiua or Nhamagiwa] in the Vunduzi administrative post [also spelt Vanduzi] in Gorongosa.
The head of state’s visit to Sofala to meet the Renamo leader comes weeks after the announcement of understandings in the decentralisation dossier, which advocates fundamental changes in the appointment of provincial governors, district administrators and mayors.

“Today, I had a meeting with Afonso Dhlakama to discuss military matters, specifically on disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR). We welcomed the report of the Committee on Military Affairs and clarified the steps to be taken in the case of Renamo officers, which, together with the DDR, will bring an end to military hostilities and open a new era for effective and lasting peace,” the president said in a statement sent yesterday to Noticias.
The statement said that details of the progress made in this area would be made public “in a timely manner”.
The decentralisation process recently agreed between the parties will be discussed by the Assembly of the Republic, to which the dossier has already been sent, and will imply an amendment to the current constitution of the country.
