Mozambique: ENI Open Day
A Ilha dos Poetas
A Ilha dos Poetas is part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the elevation of the city of Ilha de Moçambique and marks the beginning of the annual exhibition program for the Camões - Portuguese Cultural Center in Maputo.
The Island of the Poets brings together texts by Alberto Lacerda, Calane da Silva, Eduardo White, Gloria de Sant'Anna, José Craveirinha, Luís Carlos Patraquim, Luís de Camões, Luís Filipe Castro Mendes, Mia Couto, Rui Knopfli, Tomás António Gonzaga, Virgílio de Lemos e uma canção popular, putting them in dialogue with photographs of João Costa (Funcho), José Cabral, Moira Forjaz, and Sérgio Santimano and with images from the archive of the Historical Archive of Mozambique and the Center for Documentation and Photographic Training. It is not intended to present a historical or chronological view of the Island of Mozambique, but to launch the challenge of revisiting the poetic mythology of the Island evoked in verses, texts and photographs of its most illustrious cultivators.
Nelson Saúte, curator and Mozambican poet, gives the motto to this journey through the universe of the Island of Mozambique in the introductory text of the exhibition: "Teenage passion, memory or new love, song without border, paradise where dogs do not bark, and children play as pilgrims, exile and lost refuge, utopia, this Island summons and invokes a poetic syntax marked by the exuberance of its colors, the beauty of its women, or the joy of its children, and by the nostalgia of its shadows, where one cannot obliterate the precarious living conditions of many who inhabit it. Place of meeting, where one speaks Arabic, Swahili, Macua, Portuguese, of diversity, hieratic cultural mosaic. "
