An attempted kidnapping in Matola on Friday 18 March left one dead and three injured, one seriously, reports Televisao de Moçambique (TVM).
The attempted kidnapping occurred around 7:00 p.m. in the Mahotas neighbourhood, in Maputo city, when six armed individuals hijacked a 45-year-old woman about to enter her residence in her Hyundai vehicle.
The vehicle, with the victim still aboard, was intercepted by police at the market in Patrice Lumumba. A car chase followed, with fire exchanged between police and the gang during which one kidnapper was killed.
In the shootout, four members of the gang managed to escape. Police are actively looking for them.
Three people were hit by stray bullets, one of whom is in a serious condition and two with only minor injuries. Maputo Central Hospital says a total of five people injured in the Patrice Lumumba events were admitted.
One hijacker, handcuffed and receiving treatment at the hospital, was heard repenting that the life he had led was not right.
