Government hoping to recover one million hectares of idle land – Mozambique

The Government will be inspecting land use as of April 1st, with the aim of enforcing exploitation plans and payment of fees. Any space requested for economic purposes not being exploited will be recovered in favour of the State.

The inspection campaign was launched today by the Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development (MITADER) and is scheduled to run from April 1 to July 31 this year. MITADER expects to inspect more than seven million hectares of land across the country.

MITADER’s projections indicate that, currently, one million hectares are not being used for the purposes requested. Therefore, the ministry hopes to recover these hectares in favour of the state.

Because there are several situations in the country of people who have set built residences without a holding a DUAT ( Land Use Right Title), minister Celso Correia says, that much more than inspecting, the campaign will be conducting an awareness raising process for people to regularise their situation.

In the inspections carried out in the last 12 years, from 2005 to 2017, more than 1.8 million hectares of unused land were recovered in favour of the State. The fees collected by the state during the same period of time amounted to just over 330 million meticais.

Authorities expect collect about 70 million meticais in DUAT fees this year.
