United States willing to support humanitarian and health projects in Mozambique

Violence continues to haunt the Limpopo district in Gaza province with lynching and road blocks in protest of an alleged wave of trafficking in human beings and organs, which neither the police nor the population can prove.
The scenario opened last month in Zongoene and Chicumbane administrative posts with violent demonstrations that, in addition to lynching, resulted in the ransacking of suspected individuals’ homes.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique, which has been intervening to control the situation, says it is reinforcing security in places identified as at risk, in order to prevent these criminal actions from spreading and continuing to target innocent people.
According to Feliciano Chongo, provincial commander of the police in Gaza, speaking yesterday morning to Radio Moçambique in Xai-Xai, the crime wave is linked to a persistent campaign of disinformation by people whose motives are ubclear.
“These people put out false information alleging the existence of individuals who commit various crimes, such as trafficking in human beings and organs, which has never yet been proven. They do it in various ways, such as posting videos of people who have been beheaded, claiming that these are in Zongoene,” Chongo said, adding that these cases claim as victims people who have nothing to do with the matter.
The provincial commander categorically stated that those who had been victimised in Zongoene were innocent and appealed to the population not to join these demonstrations. He asked them to report anything suspicious to the police, in whom they must continue to place their trust.
Unconfirmed reports
One rumour, not confirmed by the police, has it that a young man of humble origins who lived with his older brother in Zongoene administrative post, suddenly began to show signs of wealth, to the surprise of members of his household.
Asked about the source of his good fortune, the young man would only say that it was the result of his honest work, but without ever revealing the nature of his activity, or where he was going every day when the sun set.
Meanwhile, according to rumours still unconfirmed by the authorities but rife in the Limpopo and Xai-Xai districts and other parts of Gaza province, everything came to a head when one day the young man returned home with signs of blood on his arms. Questioned vigorously by his older brother, the young man confessed to macabre crimes committed at the behest of individuals he refused to identify.
Seeming not to be in full possession of his mental faculties, he explained that this was the effect of the human blood that he was recommended to consume as a way of “gaining courage” for the execution of the work.
Another stories maintain that the victims are not native to the administrative posts in question, which is why no family has ever claimed any of its members have disappeared. They are people seized from places unknown, but killed in those areas.
Despite the scant factual foundation of these beliefs, they are strongly held in a population that has lost faith in the police, who, after about a month now, have not yet been able to clear the matter up or restore tranquillity to Limpopo district.
