Zimbabwe to process its diamonds in Botswana – Mnangagwa

Botswana and Zimbabwe have entered into an agreement that would see the latter processing its diamonds in Botswana.The deal was struck during the ongoing two-state visit by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa when he toured the Diamond Technology Centre in the capital Gaborone on Tuesday.

“We are going to start processing our diamonds here. Botswana has world-class diamond sorting facilities. My Minister of Mines will start working on it so that we do that very soon,” said Mnangagwa.

The leader, who revealed that his state visit was at the invitation of his Botswana counterpart President Ian Khama, also revealed that he was in the neighbouring country to enhance economic cooperation between Harare and Gaborone.

He also said this was first such visit by a Zimbabwean leader in 10 years as relations between the two countries were strained during the reign of former president Robert Mugabe.

Mnangagwa acknowledged that the two countries’ relationship had some ups and downs, adding that they were working on improving that.
