Mozambique: Debate on Constitutional amendment to be scheduled today

The Standing Commission of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique will today set a date for the consideration of the proposal to amend the constitution announced by President Filipe Nyusi last week.
The proposal is the result of an agreement with Afonso Dhlakama, leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition party.
The consensus reached is that provincial governors and district administrators should be proposed by their respective assemblies instead of being nominated by the central power – with mayors also appointed by the local assemblies and no longer directly elected.
The last session of parliament ended on 15 December last year.
The Standing Commission will today set the date for returning to work, as well as the calendar and topics to be discussed in the new parliamentary session, the first to be held in 2018.
