The Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, will deliver a speech today about peace negotiations with the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), a government spokeswoman has announced.
“It will be an official communication on the decentralisation process,” one of the themes of the talks, Ana Comoana said, without further elaboration.
In addition to decentralisation, the negotiating process between the Mozambican government and Renamo covers the de-politicisation of the defence forces and the integration into them of the men of the armed wing of the main opposition party.
These issues are not however included in the communication scheduled for noon from the Ponta Vermelha palace in Maputo, the official residence of the Mozambican head of state.
“On the other dialogue matters, negotiations continue,” the Council of Ministers spokeswoman said.
Between 2015 and 2016, the country returned to a scenario of military confrontations following the refusal of the main opposition party to accept defeat in the 2014 general elections, accusing the ruling Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) of fraud in the count.
In May 2017, Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama announced an indefinite truce following contacts with the Mozambican president.
