Mozambique: ENI Open Day
Open debate on Sexual and Reproductive Health in Mozambique
Sexual reproductive health as a whole faces a number of challenges, including: low contraceptive use, poor access to information and availability of contraceptive methods, low condom use that can trigger STI/HIV/AIDS infections, early pregnancies that have been leading to high rates of maternal and infant mortality, obstetric fistula, or even attempts at unsafe abortions that are also a risk to the lives and health of women and young girls.
Regarding premature pregnancies, data from 2011 indicate that more than 42% of Mozambican girls reported having had a child before age 18 and about 8% before age 15 (IDS, 2011). According to the United Nations Population Fund, to maintain the current prevalence of premature pregnancies, the country will have about 730,000 young mothers under the age of 18 by 2030 (UNFPA, 2015). These and other issues will be debated on February 1.
