The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) registered 20,814 criminal cases in 2017 as against 21,825 in 2016, a 3 percent reduction, and Maputo had the highest number of cases registered, with 11,807.
The information was advanced yesterday by the PRM Commander-in-chief Bernardino Rafael, during a one-day visit to the capital.
Homicides, physical assaults and crimes against property were the most frequent criminal incidents in Maputo.
“Of the 20,814 registered cases, the city of Maputo had 11,807, down 407 on 2016 figures.. Of the cases registered in the whole country, 70 percent were registered in Maputo (city), but in terms of police response, Maputo accounted for 85 percent,” Rafael reported.
The commander-in-chief urged the corporation to work to reduce crime in the capital city and in the country.
“We understand that the city of Maputo concentrates all the thinking mass, including also thinking criminals. So we need to be smarter to stop these criminals; we have to be smarter than them,” he urged.
After PRM General Command in Maputo, Rafael went to on to visit the Polana Caniço neighbourhood, where he held a meeting with residents of the KaMaxaquene municipal district to assess the degree of satisfaction with work carried out by the PRM.
The residents asked the PRM commander to increase the agents’ operational means. “Police cars cannot enter the alleyways. We would like them to get motorcycle support, so that agents can chase criminals in hard-to-reach places,” resident Nauma Mapuche said.
Rafael promised to take steps to improve the condition of police stations and the effectiveness of PRM agents.
