GCCC investigates Migration Services accounts

The Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC) is investigating the accounts of the Migration Services of Maputo City, from which, in March 2017, 17 million meticais were found to have gone missing ( around US$ 291.038 at current exchange rates).
According to information received by Noticias, it will be based on the findings of the current investigation that indications about people involved in the case may arise. Meanwhile, investigators have interviewed leading Migration Services officials, some still in service and some who have since left.
The money disappeared between March 23 and early April 2017, when the former Migration Board of the City of Maputo ceased to function and the new one, which is still in operation, took office.
The amount is part of total revenue of over 48.7 million meticais generated in March 2017. After collection, only a little over 31.2 million meticais was reflected in the Migration Services accounts in the capital, and the other 17.5 million could not be located.
Under approved procedures, income collected from provincial Migration Services departments is deposited in the institution’s account and then transferred to a so-called “mother account” under the National Migration Service (SENAMI) auspices, which in turn channels it to the Ministry of Finance on the 10th of each month.
According to our source, it was only when the National Migration Service was about to comply with this formality that the absence of just over 17 million meticais was discovered.
