Largest supermarket in Inhambane closed for hygiene infringements

The National Inspection of Economic Activities of Mozambique (INAE) has ordered the closure of the largest supermarket in the southern province of Inhambane for violation of trading standards, including hygiene, the INAE president told Lusa yesterday.

Rita Freitas said that an INAE team in the provincial capital found expired products, food stored on shelves also containing toiletries, compartments with rats and cats, and lack of ventilation.

“The supermarket needs a general clean. It’s not something they can do in less than three days, then they can reopen,” said Rita Freitas. The supermarket would still be fined as soon as the procedures were completed, she added.

“We have been receiving complaints about economic activity in Inhambane since last year,” Freitas said.

During inspections in the province, the INAE detected hygiene problems in two bakeries in the city of Inhambane, but only recommended correction of the anomalies, as they were not serious, Freitas said.
