Rail traffic on the Ressano Garcia line has been interrupted following heavy rain in Maputo province on Monday night, a spokesperson for Mozambique Railways (CFM) has told Lusa.
“The line is cut at the moment. Our teams have been on site since yesterday and we hope the situation will be resolved by the end of the day,” Adélio Dias said early this morning.
The Ressano Garcia rail link connects Mozambique and South Africa and serves as a means of transporting goods from Maputo port to South Africa and vice versa.
Monday night’s rain washed away the ballast the rails lie on, generating a crater that maked it impossible for trains to travel the stretch between Machava and Infulene, according to the CFM spokesman.
On Tuesday afternoon, CFM technical teams managed to rectify the problem, but the line was interrupted in the same way again today in the early hours.
The CFM spokesman said the problem, which happens in every year, is caused by the rubbish that people leave on the railway line.
“We have repeatedly drawn people’s attention to the regulation stipulating 50 metres’ distance between the rail line and residential areas,” the spokesman said, but people were not conforming.
Machava residents interviewed by TVM however point to CFM neglect as a contributory cause of the line’s collapse.
As much as 70 millimetres of rain fell in Maputo and Matola on Monday night, leaving craters in neighbourhoods in both cities.
