Mozambique: Defence Ministry says military registration target surpassed

Vehicular traffic on National Road Number One (EN1) will experience some delay at the entrance to the village of Manhiça, in Maputo province, as repair works to the railway bridge carrying the Limpopo rail line over the road get under way.
The traffic diversion, which is set to last for 25 days, was precipitated by an accident last Monday when a Transportes Lalgy truck hit the bridge due to its excessive height.
Traffic in both directions was brought to a standstill until the road was partially cleared.
The lorry, carrying two transformers, was still stuck under the bridge yesterday afternoon. Once it was removed, the contractor was able to start the rehabilitation work, which will include erecting scaffolding across the entire width of the road.
Manhiça district administrator Cristina Mafumo says the interruption of traffic was necessary for repair works on the bridge and signalling, and that the damage caused by the crash was still to be assessed.
The carrier had not complied with the 4.5 metre height restriction, she added.
According to Notícias, the rehabilitation works do not include increasing the height of the bridge.
