Much of Maputo was deprived of electricity on Tuesday, following a major breakdown in a sub-station at about 05.00
According to a press release from the publicly-owned electricity company EDM, the power cut affected the northern outlying neighbourhoods of Albazini, Mahotas, Magoanine, 3 de Fevereiro, Laulane, Hulene, and Malhazine, as well as the entire area of the national stadium and the Olympic village in Zimpeto.
EDM says electricity is now being supplied to the affected area with restrictions. A regime of rolling power cuts is in force, with electricity being provided to the affected neighbourhoods alternately.
“From the moment that the breakdown occurred, an EDM team has been on the ground, making efforts to diagnose and solve the problem as quickly as possible”, says the release.
The weather is not helping matters. It poured with rain in Maputo on Monday night and sporadically on Tuesday. These damp conditions do not allow the EDM team to carry out certain checks of the equipment.
EDM warns that full power might be re-established at any moment, and so all electrical installations should be regarded as switched on.
