The Mozambican Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) announced today that it has paid around 12 million dollars (EUR 10 million) in overtime debts to the country’s primary and secondary school teachers.
Manuel Simbine, a spokesman for MINEDH, quoted today by Notícias, the country’s main daily, said that the debt was liquidated in recent weeks and corresponded to the 2016 and 2017 school years.
“We are now in full liquidation of debts so that we can after this better manage or control the process,” Simbine said.
MINEDH, he continued, is aware that it will always need teachers to work overtime, but it is necessary that the process is better managed to avoid the accumulation of debts.
“We will need to have effective control of who are the teachers who have worked and who deserve to receive, all this in order to better plan the corresponding payment and avoid paying colleagues who are not entitled,” he added.
The MINEDH spokesman said that in the 2018 school year, 5,000 teachers will be hired throughout the country for primary and secondary education.
Seven million students will attend primary and secondary education and adult literacy classes as well as teacher training institutions.
The Mozambican National Education System will also have 234 new primary schools and 27 new secondary schools.
On the other hand, 580 schools, between primary and secondary, will introduce new teaching cycles as a way to absorb more students.
