The governor of Manica has said he expects the criminal justice authorities to solve the murder of a Portuguese citizen in the capital, Chimoio, in December, and hold the perpetrators criminally accountable.
Alberto Mondlane was speaking on Monday at a service of commemoration of Maria Laura da Silva Pereira in Chimoio cathedral. His eulogy paid tribute to the legacy of a determined woman whose commercial activity had made her a reference point in the province.
The Bishop of Chimoio, Dom João Carlos said that Maria Laura Pereira would be remembered for her willingness to help her neighbours in times of need. Messages from the Portuguese community in Chimoio spoke of her journey since she arrived in Mozambique in the 1970s, notable for her contributions in many different spheres of commerce.
Also present at the vigil were individuals linked to the government and commerce, friends and family. Maria Laura Pereira has been laid to rest in her native Portugal.
