The band Kakana will share the stage with renowned Mozambican musician Chico Antonio in a solidarity concert on Friday, March 18, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Francophonie in Mozambique and Kakana lead singer Yolanda is the sponsor of the event.
From 14 to 30 March this year, Mozambique is celebrating 10 years as an observer member of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. “We are pleased to organize this 10th anniversary celebration of La Francophonie, which will offer a large and diverse audience various cultural events in Maputo and in other provinces of the country,” reads the press release.
Chico Antonio’s more than 40-year artistic career has coalesced into a style of music that is unequivocally Mozambican but defies labels. It is an accretion of this and that that the musician will bring to this concert, not forgetting of course his hit “Baila Maria”, which won the 1990 Radio France Internationale.
Kakana is undoubtedly among the best bands playing today – witness their hits “Xiluva” and “Suhura”. Their set always summons a legion of fans and tonight will combine the band’s good name with a social responsibility cause.
The drought currently ravaging the south is causing a huge crisis, especially to farmers. Lending its musical talents to the fight, the band will take to the stage of the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Centre on Friday to sing “No to Drought”.
