Mozambique: 15-day-old Neusa in night-time terror escape
O País
A six-year-old girl fell to her death from the 11th floor of a building in central Maputo on Monday afternoon.
The six-year-old was playing on the balcony of the Cardoso building apartment when she fell. Her parents were at work and the maid who was looking after her had gone down to the building services area to wash clothes.
Witnesses describe the events as happening in the blink of an eye.
“I was sitting here when, suddenly, I heard a noise at the window. Then someone said they thought it was a person. We went to see what it was, and there was the child’s body, lying right there.”
Half dazed, the maid, Paula Tivane, who had been working for the family for three months and was looking after the child at the time of the accident, said: “In the early days I used to take the girl down with me when I was doing the laundry, but she didn’t like it and her mother told me to leave her upstairs. So I left her alone today, as usual, never expecting this could happen. The windows and doors were locked. I think she must have taken a chair over to the window … “
The girl’s body was removed from the building’s porch by the fire department.
The parents of the deceased have as yet made no comment.
