Three Rwandan soldiers killed in Mozambique ambush: Army
Unknown assailants kidnapped businessman Abdul Razak Abdulla in Tete city on Friday 11 March, police confirmed on Monday.
This is the second instance of businessmen in the province being kidnapped, the first being the Chinese quarry owner who went missing in January of this year. Both abductions occurred in the Chingodzi neighbourhood.
Police spokesman Lurdes Ferreira said that Abdula disappeared at about 4:00 a.m. on his way to the mosque, and said that police had found traces of blood in the car he was driving.
Members of the public reported an abandoned car in the Chingodzi neighbourhood to police, who discovered that the car belonged to the abducted businessman.
“We are pursuing the alleged kidnappers and intend to catch them,” Ferreira said, adding that the police were also continuing to search for Rainbow quarry owner, Lee Yit, for whom kidnappers have demanded a five million meticais ransom (about US$100,000).
The abduction of Razak has soured the mood in Tete province, where businessmen are demanding that the PRM take more stringent measures to curb the wave of kidnappings.
The situation is worrying not only for entrepreneurs, but also for the parents of children with albinism. Since December, seven such children under the age of five have been reported abducted in the Moatize, Angónia, Doa, Cahora Bassa and Marara districts of the province.
Asked if the police had any clues as to the identity of the kidnappers or the whereabouts of their victims, Ferreira replied in the negative, saying only that efforts to catch the criminals were ongoing.
“The abduction of young people with skin pigmentation problems is a cross-border, organized crime matter, which is why we have so far failed to apprehend the perpetrators,” Ferreira said. “But, in any case, we are continuing to work on solving the cases.”
An albino adult recently escaped a kidnapping attempt in Angónia after being imprisoned inside a market stall where he had gone to buy some necessities. He used his mobile phone to call his family, who immediately alerted the police.
