Three months on, and those responsible for the murder of the mayor of Nampula are still unknown. Police say they have good information but do not say when it will be released. The “Political Project Mahamudo Amurane” speaks of “hand of the regime”.
Mahamudo Amurane, then president of the Nampula City Council, was murdered on October 4, 2017, at his private residence. Three months after his death, the perpetrators of the crime are not yet known, nor has anyone been detained.
In an interview with DW Africa, Abdul Remane Andarusse, coordinator of the central committee of the “Mahamudo Amurane Political Project”, a group who were supporting the independent candidacy of the then mayor and who wanted to create a new political party in Nampula, says he is “annoyed” but not surprised at the silence of the authorities on the case.
“We know how the regime does. Whenever things like this happen, they shout and promise that they will clarify things quickly, but in so many cases things end up like this.
Andurusse said that his group would continue to pressure and “raise their voices” until results were obtained, even though they recognize that crimes in Mozambique are often never solved. “I know the case will end up dying, as others have,” he adds.
Nampula police spokesman Zacarias Nacute said that every effort was being made to solve the case, but “strong leads” were so far insufficient to “conclude the investigation process”.
“The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) is investigating, and as soon as there are tangible results, the media will be informed,” he added.
Amurane supporters accuse regime
Andarusse however goes on to indicate the probable suspects responsible for the mayor’s death.
“Things are happening and there is no clarification, which is a clear indication of the hand of the regime in the matter; we have nothing to think about,” he concludes.
The Mozambican Rights League in Nampula has told DW Africa that the case will take some time to clear up, but that it is optimistic of a positive outcome.
