Republic of Mozambique Police spokesman Inacio Dina said on Tuesday that 24 people had died on national roads in 28 road accidents over the festive season.
“A preliminary analysis, indicates that 28 accidents that caused 24 deaths, compared to 34 last year in the same period,” Dina said, adding that a further 18 people has been injured.
Reporting back in Maputo on police activities during the festive season, Dina said that police had arrested more than 30 people for various crimes, and seized four firearms and 29 rounds of ammunition.
“We continue to call on communities to use our telephone hotlines to report any infringements,” he said. Despite the road deaths, the preliminary balance was positive, he felt.
Data from the National Institute of Land Transport indicate that from January to September 2017, 1,478 road traffic accidents had killed 1,057 nationwide. In 2016, the country registered 1,379 deaths from 1,688 road accidents. The figures reveal that five people die every day in accidents on Mozambique’s roads.
