The National Directorate of Civil Identification has reiterated that Mozambican identity cards continue to be produced normally throughout the country, even after the termination of the contract with Semlex, the company previously contracted for the purpose.
The Mozambican State rescinded the contract based on the results of an audit which found that Semlex was not complying with clauses in its contract. The production and issuance of IDs is now being undertaken by Mozambican technicians.
National Directorate of Civil Identification spokesperson Alberto Sumbane said that, since the termination of the contract with Semlex in September, more than 270,000 ID cards had been produced.
Sumbane also reported that six illicit identity cards had been identified over the festive season, involving both Mozambican and Portuguese and Nigerian nationals.
