The former chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mozambican Agricultural Development Fund, Setina Titosse, was been sentenced to 18 years in prison yesterday for embezzling 170 million meticais (EUR 2.3 million).
Proceedings saw the former leader, along with 28 other people, accused of setting up counterfeit agricultural projects in order to secure funding from the FDA.
In addition to Titosse, the Maputo Court handed down sentences ranging from 12 months to 12 years in prison to 24 other people in a trial thought to have had more defendants than any other in the history of Mozambique.
Among the defendants are former managers of the institution, accountants, agricultural engineers, a customs technician and businessmen, some of whom may receive suspended sentences on payment of fines.
The defendants will also have to pay daily fines equal to 5% of the minimum wage for two years, and all assets acquired with the embezzled money will revert to the state.
Appeals may be lodged within five days.
