Mozambique police (PRM) will get a new light blue uniform in 2018, replacing the one that has been used since the 90s, Commander-in-chief Bernardino Rafael said during a visit to Cuamba district in Niassa province.
The new uniforms will probably be worn from May 17 next year, when the corporation celebrates 42 years of its creation, and will be the fifth uniform in its history.
When it was created in 1975, members of the Mozambique Police Corps (CPM) wore a blue uniform. When it became the People’s Police of Mozambique (PPM), they swapped that for green, and later brown.
When the force became the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM), members donned the grey uniform they have worn to this day.
Rafael says the change of uniform necessarily implies a change of attitude on the part of the PRM. According to him, the negative behavior of some members had creating stains in the eyes of society.
“The change in uniform will imply a change in attitude. We want honest and committed police officers. We are not changing the uniform in order to escape the pejorative terms that society applies to some of the wrongful and lesser behaviors of our agents. We do so because we think it’s the ideal moment to make a qualitative leap, so members will also have to change their behavior,” he said.
The commander-in-chief emphasized that all members of the force should be concerned about their dress, treating the uniform, which represented the state, well. Being the first person a foreigner sees on entering the country, police officers must be upright, clean and approachable, Rafael noted.
