Yuri da Cunha, an Angolan singer, born in Sumbe, province of Kwanza-Sul, on September 13, 1980. At the age of three, Yuri was taken by his family to Luanda because of the war. He lived close to his uncles, his brother, his father, and most of his mother's family. The adjustment was easy.
Yuri da Cunha began in his childhood, watching the rehearsals of the set "Os Kwanzas", where his father, Henrique da Cunha "Riquito", was an accomplished guitarist. Later in Luanda, in the Rocha Pinto neighborhood, accompanied by his cousins and brothers (currently linked to music), he perfected voice and interpretation techniques with Manuel Costa "Makanha".
When he began to compose, Yuri had several sounds in his head. He was influenced by his father at the time, but espeically by musicians Bonga, Teta Lando, David Zé and Urbano de Castro. Then in the 1990s, he heard Eduardo Paim, Carlos Burity, Balão, André Mingas, these were the influences of Angola that Yuri had.
He only sang Angolan music because his father did not allow him to listen to international music. At the time they only heard songs from Michael Jackson and Madonna. Yuri is said to be a Michael Jackson fan since childhood. And it was from there that he came to the attraction for the dance music.
With almost 10 years old, he distinguished himself in a street contest, Ku Tonoca, and in 1993 he entered the school of National Radio of Angola. On June 1, 1993, Children's Day, Yuri made her first presentation.
In 1994, he enrolled in the competitions for children's music of National Radio of Angola (RNA) and was featured in the contests, with the song "Amigo", by the teacher "Makanha", having won the award for best children's song. From there to fame it was a short step.
He began his career after winning a street contest in 1994 in his hometown. Ten years later, he won another contest with the music Makumba, being chosen by the public among the ten most played on local radio.
