Mozambique distinguished as Champion in the Fight Against Malaria
DW / Construction of the Machaze district hospital on hold
The construction of the Machaze district hospital in central Mozambique, started in 2014 and budgeted at around EUR 3 million, have been suspended for two years now owing to lack of funds.
“We were going to have a surgery ward, and the hospital itself will have a capacity of 200 beds with all the services, so when construction is finished, Machaze will have to support other districts, such as Mossurize,” Machaze district administrator Fernando Samuel relates.
Pending the hospital’s completion, however, it’s the population of Machaze that has to move.
“Currently, when we have problems, we look to Mossurize hospital or Muxungué, but when the new hospital is completed, we will be able to support Chibabava hospital in Sofala province and Massangena hospital in Gaza,” Samuel says.
Samuel promises that efforts are being made to get work restarted, but could offer no firm date.
Will the work be completed?
Manica governor Alberto Ricardo Mondlane, says he has talked to Health Minister Nazira Abdula in an attempt to restart work on the hospital.
“This is one of the main challenges we face in Machaze district: completing the hospital which we were fortunate enough to be able to start,” he said.
“There are some constraints, which we are trying to overcome, but we believe our government will find solutions to this issue. This is a subject we are addressing not only at the provincial level, but also at the level of the Ministry of Health.”
Construction of the Machaze district hospital is a Ministry of Health project, with financing from the state budget. The project includes six residences for health professionals.
When complete, the Machaze district hospital will serve people from Chibabava and Muxungué in Sofala and Massangena in Gaza, as well as neighbouring districts such as Mossurize in the province of Manica.
