The team set up by the government to investigate alleged irregularities committed by defence and security forces during the fight against armed Renamo men in the village of Nkondezi has concluded that “the allegations are untrue”.
The team, led by Deputy Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs Joaquim Verissimo, met Tete provincial governor Paulo Auade and local authorities in the Moatize and Tsangano districts, sites of the alleged atrocities, but says it has not found any evidence of the incidents alleged by Human Rights Watch in a report recently submitted to the government, along with a request for an independent investigation.
