Mozambqiue: Criminal case opened against eight involved in gold theft - AIM report
Around 5,000 people have been killed in accidents on Mozambique’s roads over the last three years, according to data released by the National Institute of Land Transport (Inatter).
The figure represents an average of five fatalities per day. In 2016 alone, the country registered 1,379 deaths resulting from 1,688 road accidents. This year, up to September, 1,057 deaths had been registered in 1,478 accidents.
The numbers were released in connection with an Inatter symposium on road accidents scheduled for this Thursday in Maputo, promoted under the motto “Road safety: a responsibility of all of us. Let us value life”.
The event will bring together civil society, police authorities and government to assess the causes of increased road traffic accidents. Among other topics, participants will discuss the degradation of road infrastructure and the vehicle fleet, issues which, along with alcohol abuse, are often cited as causes of accidents.
