Prepaid monthly passes covering daily use of buses and railcars to and from Maputo city centre on MetroBus, a private initiative that starts in December in the Greater Maputo area, will cost 3,500 meticais [around US$58 at current exchange rates].
Access will only be with a pass that can be recharged for the use of the system for a day, a week or a month. The monthly pass rate is set at 3,500 meticais for the start-up phase of the project.
The information has been provided by Fleetrail, the owner of the project, who say MetroBus responds to the challenges of passenger transport in the metropolitan area of Maputo, labouring under a small bus fleet and heavy traffic congestion.
Amade Camal, managing director of Fleetrail, said that the Baixa-Matola-Gare link by MetroBus will take 20 minutes, while the Maputo-Matola trip will take only 15 minutes. These two lines are the first of the three phases of the initiative.
In the subsequent stages, the railcars and buses will serve Marracuene and the village of Boane by June, and in December next year Goba, Ressano Garcia and Manhiça.
Asked if the monthly fee was not too high for most potential users, Camal explained that the project was designed for the middle class, taking the thousands of passenger cars that queue daily from the periphery to the centre of the city so that minibuses can make better time transporting those who cannot afford 3,500 meticais a month.
The project is made up of four rail sets of four coaches each and 100 buses, 63 of 50 seats and 37 of 30. The Metrobus trains, which unlike CFM trains will run all day and not just at peak times, can carry up to 1,100 passengers per trip, according to the company.
