Mozambican Minister of State Administration and Public Administration, Carmelita Rita Namashulua, has requested the annulment of Américo Iemenle’s inauguration as interim president of the City Council of Nampula, in the north of the country.
The city’s Democratic Movement of Mozambique-controlled municipal assembly swore Iemenle in last week.
Carmelita Namashulua said the Nampula municipal assembly had failed to act as an oversight body and guarantor of legality, and had trampled and ignored the law and recommendations issued by the local authorities governing body.
Despite receiving the letter from the minister, Iemenle on Monday dismissed the city councillors for economic promotion and fairs, infrastructure, urbanisation and the environment, municipal protection and inspection, works and maintenance, and the director of urbanisation and lands. This decision also affected all heads of municipal administrative posts.

Sources contacted by Notícias say that more dismissals may occur in the coming days, targeting mainly the councillors who worked with the late chairman of the Municipal Council, Mahamudo Amurane.
Amurane was assassinated on October 4 by unknown individuals.
The dismissal of councillors on Monday comes as Mozambique’s third largest city heads for a by-election on January 24, 2018.
