The Minister of Combatants of Mozambique, Eusébio Lambo, said on Thursday that Mozambican war veterans are eager to see their problems addressed by the government, particularly as regards pensions.
Speaking during the inauguration of new ministry officials, Lambo emphasized the urgency of solving issues affecting the combatants in the liberation from Portuguese colonialism and the civil war.
“Each of us has to try our best to find solutions to combatants’ problems because they are impatient to see their difficulties overcome, and sometimes aggressive,” the minister said.
Lambo said that the ministry should speed up the resolution of problems related to miscalculated pensions and pensions for widows and other dependents of deceased veterans.
“The updated registration process finished in December last year, but some steps remain to be taken for us to know how many there are in total,” Lambo said.
The minister estimates there are more than 170,000 with ex-combatant status surviving from the two conflicts, and said that the pilot phase of a 15,000-unit housing project to improve their living conditions would be launched in April.
For many years, the government only recognized those who fought against Portuguese colonialism as ex-combatants, but recently both Frelimo and Renamo fighters in the 16-year civil war which ended in 1992 have been admitted to the group.
