Transportation of passengers and vehicles on the Maputo-Catembe ferry crossing will be interrupted from Monday for emergency repair works on the metal bridge connecting the pier to the ferry.
This piece of infrastructure has long failed to provide security for users, leading the Transport and Communications sector to restrict cargo vehicles on the crossing to a gross weight of not more than four tonnes.
At the time, the Ministries of Transport and Communications, Interior and Public Works, Housing and Water Resources interacted with the Catembe Friends Association in the framework of regular consultations and consultation on security measures at the crossing.
Passenger crossing will be available from the Port of Maputo Fisheries wharf using smaller vessels such as the Mapapai, Lalaua and Boa Viagem.
A statement from the Ministry of Transport and Communications Wednesday said that the interruption of service would last two weeks.
“In order to permit the execution of emergency repair work on the metal bridge connecting the barge to the ferryboats in Maputo for a period of 15 days from 27 November 2017 to 11 December 2017, an passengers and vehicle services will be interrupted,” the document states.
News of the interruption of vehicle crossings seems not yet to have reached the residents who work or live on the Catembe side, since goods pass through Boane on a road which is currently undergoing asphalting works .
Such is the case of Judieta Saúte, who crosses regularly with construction material and will be obliged to suspend work or to head for Catembe by road.
“I did not know there would be this interruption, but I’ll have to find alternatives to continue building. I hope the works will be swift, because this will hurt many users of these services,” she observed.
According to Anselmo Macanha, a merchant who was born and lives in Catembe, the shutdown of the ferry will reduce the flow of goods from Maputo to commercial enterprises.
“Of one thing I am sure: during these days I will be harmed. But I recognise that it’s important to restore the normal functioning of the bridge,” he said.
