The process of importing and exporting fishery products in Mozambique will from January 2018 be conducted through the Single Electronic Window of Customs (SeW), simplifying procedures and reducing customs clearance times.
The first three-month phase will cover only the city and province of Maputo, and implementation in other parts of the country will be preceded by training for operators in the fisheries sector and customs brokers.
The National Fish Inspection Institute (INIP), in partnership with Mozambican Customs and the SeW operator the Mozambique Community Network (MCNet), held a seminar to raise sensitivity and collect feedback on the measure in the Mozambican capital on Thursday.
Diário de Moçambique reports that the National Directorate of Customs Procedures and Norms of the Directorate-General for Customs, Joaquim Macuácua, explained that INIP’s inclusion was part of the government’s plan to incorporate multiple public services in the initiative.
According to Macuácua, the initiative will simplify clearance procedures and reduce discrepancies between the data provided by the various stakeholders in the process.
Single Electronic Window coordinator Esmeralda Machel said that the implementation of the system resulted from encouraging public entities to join the platform.
“We are coordinating with various institutions involved in the foreign trade process in the sense of joining JUE, which is a system of management of the merchandise clearance process,” she said.
Director of the National Fish Inspection Institute Lucia Sumbana Santos said the platform would facilitate the collection of statistical data, “which remains a challenge for us, because often the information that is provided by customs does not coincide with that of the operators”.
The process will also improve revenue collection and service delivery by the National Fish Inspection Institute, Sumbana Santos said.
