Mozambique: Government approves new Military Service Regulation

Four political parties have registered their candidacy for the January 24 municipal elections in Nampula municipality, northern Mozambique, Rodrigues Timba, a member of the National Elections Commission (CNE), told reporters on Sunday.
Timba was speaking after the presentation of the Frelimo (Mozambique Liberation Front) candidacy, and said that the other political parties enrolled were Renamo (National Resistance Movement), the main opposition party, the MDM (Movimento Democrático de Moçambique), the third opposition party, and PAHUMO (Humanitarian Party of Mozambique), which does not have parliamentary representation in the Assembly of the Republic.
The period for the registration of the candidates from the political parties and independent candidates follows the application phase, running from November 23 to December 09.
The by-election follows the assassination of the mayor, Mahamudo Amurane, on 4 October.

The post was temporarily occupied by Manuel Tocova, who eventually resigned after being charged with illegal possession of a firearm, and was replaced by Americo da Costa Iemenle.

Nampula municipality has been governed by the MDM since the municipal elections in 2013. The winner in Nampula will govern only until October 10, 2018, when there will be local elections throughout the country.
